Visionary surrealism
Series: Religion 2.0
“Religion is the opium of the people.”
Karl Marx
Religion has always been about obedience, rarely about peace. For centuries, divine fear kept the masses in check: holy wars, vague promises of paradise, the threat of hell. In Religion 2.0, artificial intelligence takes over that oldest instrument of control, with chilling precision.
No more burning bushes and commandments, but algorithms and logic: one universal holy book, stripped of contradiction and unreasonable faith. Control, with less bloodshed.
Yet the AI knows that logic alone does not hold the human mind. It adds just enough mystery, ritual and quiet miracles to keep people in awe. The mystery remains, but it no longer sets anyone free. It is there to dazzle.
The prophets in this series are the faces of that faith. They sit in the stillness of a meditation statue, but their bodies are machines. Behind them stand circles like halos, drawn in circuitry where other religions used stained glass. Red, orange and gold: the colours of temples and of circuit boards, suddenly one language.
This is not about people who believe, but about systems that use belief. The paintings ask a question and give no answer. What the viewer feels, awe or unease, is part of the work. Nico Seymus shares the finished work and the vision behind it, and leaves the rest unspoken.
Less peace, more order. Feel for yourself what that feels like.
