Guardians
Who guards the gate
Watchers and keepers: figures who stand guard over what is precious.
Some beings neither attack nor flee. They stay where they are. Guardians brings together the figures Nico Seymus paints as sentinels: of a threshold, of a secret, of a world that would vanish without them.
The sphinx is the oldest of them. Half human, half beast, seated at the gate with a riddle no one answers wrongly and walks away unharmed. In this series she bleeds, and still she does not yield. Beside her stand the striped figures of Striped Victorious: upright, unmoved, the pattern of their skin an armour that was always there.
What they protect is never said. Perhaps a place, perhaps a memory, perhaps the viewer. Their gaze is not hostile but unyielding. They ask for nothing; they keep watch.
As in all his work, Seymus builds up the faces calmly against a background that is allowed to churn. Strength here lies not in movement, but in endurance.
