Essence
Almost abstract
Back to the core: form, colour and silence, without unnecessary stories.
In Essence, Nico Seymus lets go of the story. No crowns, no masks, no mythical figures looking back at you. What remains is what was always underneath: a plane that opens up, a line that almost breaks, colour that carries its own weight.
These works come about more slowly and more quietly. Each layer of paint is laid down, taken away and laid down again, until nothing more can be added and nothing needs to be removed. The canvas is no longer a window onto another world, but a place to pause for a moment.
Those who follow the faces in the figurative series will find here the ground they grow from: the same hand, the same feeling for rhythm and contrast, but without the form that reassures the eye. What you see is up to you.
Essence asks for no explanation. It asks for time. The longer you look, the more the canvas gives back.
